Lt Col Ajit Bhandarkar, Shaurya Chakra (Posthumous) 2nd in Command, 25 RR | 18 Madras, fell fighting terrorists in J&K during Faizalabad Operation this day in 1999, leaving behind his wife and two school going boys. His wife, Shakuntala had just picked up a job as an educationist, encouraged by Lt Col Ajit to complete her graduation and masters. She left the job in Delhi and moved to Bangalore to start a new life supported by the Indian Army, Madras Regiment and Lt Col Ajit’s Sainik School and other course mates.

In the last 20 years, Veer Naari Mrs Shakuntala Ajit Bhandarkar, single handedly brought up their two sons, following her husband’s ideals and principles. She worked as a teacher in Army Public School Bangalore and moved up the ladder to become Principal at ISE. Both the sons chose to wear the uniform like their father. Elder son, Captain Nirbhay Bhandarkar has joined his father’s unit, 18 Madras Regiment after passing out from #OTA Chennai and younger, Sub Lt Akshay Bhandarkar has joined the Indian Navy after graduating as an Engineer. Salute to this brave family 🇮🇳
